There’s an endless amount to learn about coffee. From the history of the plant and bean to the chemistry of flavor and the science of taste. There are a lot of great books out there. Here are a few of my favorites:

The Joy of Coffee by Corby Kummer
Full of great information about coffee. This book will bring you up to speed on the world of coffee very quickly. It’s also a good source of information on obscure brewing devices.

Coffee: A guide to buying, brewing and enjoying by Kenneth Davids
One of my favorite books about coffee. Full of so much great information about coffee and coffee history. Written by one of the most respected authors on the subject of coffee.

The Coffee Companion by Jon Thorn
A great reference book with a nice section of coffee cupping and assessing coffee flavors.

Espresso Coffee: The chemistry of quality by Andrea Illy
An organic chemistry lesson on coffee. Very informative, but extremely technical. This book deals with quality standards of growing, harvesting, grading, roasting, grinding and storing coffee to be used primarily as an espresso product.

Product Review: Ekobrew reusable K-cup filter

A common problem with single cup coffee brewers is that coffee choices are limited to what comes pre-packaged in K-cups. If you want to use fresh coffee from your favorite neighborhood coffee shop (like Dunn Bros) you have to find an alternative.

We’ve tested K-cup adapters in the past with poor results. Either they are cumbersome or don’t brew an acceptable cup of coffee. After more testing recently, we have found a few that we like, one of which is the Ekobrew.

The EkoBrew is a reusable K-cup filter for your Keurig one-cup coffee brewer. It’s the same size as a pre-packaged K-cup and fits directly into your Keurig coffee machine without having to remove the filter holder. The Ekobrew refills easily, uses a built in metal mesh filter and has a sealing lid to help prevent overflow during brewing. It gives you very similar extraction characteristics of a typical manufacturer-packaged K-cup. Overall, it’s an easy alternative to a pre-packaged K-cup, and also allows you to use fresher coffee for an overall better cup of coffee.
