Mexico is the fourth largest producer of arabica coffee. Coffee was introduced to Mexico in the 19th century from Jamaica, and is cultivated in the lower half of the country, south of Mexico City. The main growing regions are Veracruz, along the Golf of Mexico, Oaxaca in the Central Region and Chiapas along the Guatemalan boarder. In these regions major crops include corn, beans, soybeans, peanuts, sesame seeds, coffee, cacao, sugar cane, mango’s, bananas and wheat. These crops take up 95% of the cultivated land in these states and 90% of the agricultural production. During the 1980′s, coffee became Mexico’s most valuable export crop. In 1985 coffee growers produced 4.9 million 132 pound bags earning coffee exports $882 million US dollars. The history and success of this coffee is as rich as it’s taste.
