GEOGRAPHIC PROFILE
Mexico is the fourth largest producer of arabica coffee. Coffee was introduced into Mexico during the nineteenth century from Jamaica, and is cultivated in the lower half of the country, south of Mexico City.
Seventy-five percent of Mexican coffee growers work plots of fewer than two hectares. These small cultivators produced about 30 percent of the country's annual harvest; larger and more efficient farms produce the rest.
